Classic: highest in quality; of enduring interest; noteworthy – worth remembering; traditional event. Thank God the dictionary includes traditional event in the definition of classic, or I wouldn’t understand what the World Baseball Classic meant.
Of course, we all know the World Baseball Classic has begun, right? Japan opened the event versus China in the wee hours of the morning in the U.S. I set my alarm for 4:30 a.m. so not to miss the fist pitch. Ya, right.
I’m sure the “Classic” will gain interest as it progresses, especially if the U.S. does well. But, don’t count on it. Baseball is back, but it’s time for spring training. Even baseball fanatics need time to warm up to our national pastime. Also, when the best of the best don’t play, Americans have little interest. And when MLB teams prefer their star players stay home, how can its fan base support it?
The World Baseball Classic was developed for the rest of the world to watch. And that’s exactly what they’ll get. No one here cares.
Also, due to the Classic, the 2009 World Series will be played in November this year. Ridiculous.

About the only positive outcome I can see for the WBC is that A-Rod will blow an
ACL or suffer some other season-ending (or better, career-ending) injury. Or perhaps his little hip cyst (steroid related side effect) will let the little girl sit out the tournament.

This is a great idea until a superstar (MLB player) gets hurt and is out for the season!

I been really hooked on this World Baseball Classic tournament recently.. I must have catched every single game that’s been played… It’s exciting to see baseball game that’s play in such high/tense level. I feel like it’s so much bigger in stake then winning the MLB world series, because it’s not just one area of the US we are talking about.. it’s the world competing..
ever since I move to US when I was 12.. I always wonder about the name of MLB “World Series”.. why is it named world series? if it’s not the WORLD competing? it’s just bunch teams from the US. I guess back in the day whoever named it are very big headed, saying US is the world~ no other countries matter… or probably simply just a marketing scheme.
But 2009 World Baseball Classic is the real deal and is as big as it could get.
I stayed up till 5:30 am couple nights in a row to catch the country rivals Japan and Korea game. I got to watch players i have dreamed of watching play on my TV. i mean really. nippon ham’s Yu Darvish was insanely amazing.. (supposed to be the world’s rank #1 pitcher) and he prabably won’t sign with the major leagues team till 2015. I absolutely loves the Japan Team, every single player are ridiculous amazing players.. anyway I”m rooting for Japan and the US.
I just hope people from the US get it because WBC really live up to the hype and excitement every single game as a baseball fan it’s defiantly a treat.
The WBC is a brilliant concept. Keep in mind, this event is in it’s infany. It’s not going to be anywhere close to FIFA’s World Cup or hockey in th eOle Olympics in hockey right off the bat. This is just a start and it’s going to take time to grow the popularity of the event.
MLB has become such a bland product anyways. The players are so pampered and spoiled by their salaries that you rarely see high intensity baseball in a random regular season game. Baseball needs more postseason/tournament style competition where every pitch leaves you on the edge of your seat. This past winter, the Caribbean Series I loved every minute of it. There were lots of washed up journeymen, but the ballplayers went all out like there was no tomorrow.
i just wish one day WBC will be like the FIFA world cup that the fans would care… wait the min.. here US don’t really care about the FIFA world cup anyway.. does people in the US care about anything? any international competition at all? agh.. I feel like i need to just travel to different countries and experience new things..
