Demetrius Jones’ Disappearing Act at Notre Dame

Demetrius Jones Okay…let me get this straight. Last Saturday QB Demetrius Jones dressed for Notre Dame’s home game against Penn State, which the Irish lost. This Saturday ESPN reported that Jones has enrolled at Northern Illinois University where he hopes to play football next year. Now, I am not an expert on NCAA regulations. However, assuming that Jones is not paying his own tuition, room, board and fees to attend NIU, am I supposed to believe that within five school days (Sept 10 –14) the following events took place:

  1. Jones contacted NIU and initiated contact with the coaching staff who would have told him he needed a release from Notre Dame.
  2. Jones contacted the Notre Dame athletic department and asked for a release from his scholarship.
  3. The release was granted.
  4. Jones filled out an application to NIU.
  5. NIU reviewed the Jones’ application and financial paper and granted him admission for classes at NIU which began on August 27.
  6. Charlie Weis learns the Jones’ has “missed the bus” for the Friday team trip to Michigan. Somehow he is surprised (see item # 2)

Someone out there, please explain to me how all this can happen. There is nothing at the NIU admissions website that indicates that such a rapid transfer of students is even possible. Maybe Jones has only enrolled. Maybe he won’t begin classes until January. Maybe he will be coming to school as a walk-on player, paying his own way. But I doubt it. Every single stinking word of this story. Where is the NIU Athletic Director? Where is the NIU President? Where is the NCAA?

And why am I starting to think that Charlie Weis is the mirror image of his mentor Bill Belichick?

  1. If your going to take cheap shots based on an “ESPN” report without any facts from Jones or Wies or ND or NIU, at least get YOUR facts straight. ND hasn’t played Oregon this year.

Editor’s Note: The original blog listed Oregon as Notre Dame’s opponent. The typographical error has been amended to reflect the correct opponent, Penn State. Ed.

  3. Okay… let me straighten you out, Notre Dame played Penn State away the previous weekend and Jones attended. Michigan had Oregon at home the previous weekend. Notre Dame was at Michigan last weekend and Demetrius missed the bus. This article will straighten you out even more:

    http://www.star.niu.edu/article.php?id=381

This is from the Chicago Daily Southtown:

“Meanwhile, Demetrius Jones has turned up in the Northern Illinois University student e-mail directory, with information that matches his personal profile. The South Bend Tribune reported Jones, a sophomore who started at quarterback for Notre Dame in the opener, had enrolled at Northern Illinois on Wednesday, the last day to do so while being eligible for the majority of the 2008 season.

Curiously, Jones still practiced with the Fighting Irish on Wednesday and Thursday. Weis was unaware that Jones was even contemplating leaving Notre Dame until Jones missed the team bus to Michigan on Friday afternoon. If Notre Dame does not release him from his National Letter of Intent, Jones will have to pay for his tuition.”

As far as where everybody is, I am sure in special situations the wheels get greased, things happen quickly and the details are sorted out later so long as everything is within the rules. Judging by what I have read, it is totally within the rules of the NCAA.

Notre Dame’s home game against Oregon? You mean the Oregon team that wears those plain blue and white jerseys and is coached by Joe Paterno?

Any explanation of the machinations and intrigue behind Demetrius Jones’ sudden transfer will be way over your muddled head, Frank.

  7. Okay…Oregon, Penn State, while the writer should have gotten that fact right, reality is how does a sophomore get transcripts sent from Notre Dame to Northern Illinois without
Charlie Weis knowing……that’s what you should question…….ETB

  8. 1. double was the victim of some con artists posing as journalists at espn.com.

2.fortunately, double d and his family, with some help from nd ad kevin white, has decided to play act honorably and to discuus the entire matter with kevin white and charlie weis.

3.if double d still really wants to transfer, notre dame will help him in the process and we wish him well.

    4. the jerks at espn who tried to trick double d had what they thought was a setup to drive recruits and players away from nd. espn.com preceeded the stories about double d with another nd racist diatribe by pat forde featured on the front page of espn.com’s college football sports section which they knew to be fraudulent.

5.the same cabal even sent someone up to seattle for tyrone willingham’s press conference before the ucla game, lokking for tyrone to say that he was pleased that nd was 0-3, only to be slapped down by tyrone.

    6. then came the fraudulent stories about double d tranferring because charlie weis had lied to him and that he could not trust the nd coaches. double d has exposed that story as a baldfaced lie.

    7. if these con artists were not illegally using disney( espn’s parent) to futher their civil racketerring conspiracy, we, as disney shareholders would not be so infuriated and determined to get these crooks exposed and fired, along with inflicting some really nasty economic damages on the court system.

    8. the intent of this cabal within espn is the same that it has been since 2003 when we started printing out their stories and gathering other evidence about them and some other con artists taking paychecks from companies in which we own shares- to drive players and recruits away from nd and other schools to pete carroll and his renegade football program at usc

    9. we politely warned all of these jerks of the economic consequences. however, they insisted on digging their own economic graves even deeper, obviously thinking that they would escape with thje type of coverup that has worked so far for that con artist reggie bush and pete carroll and the usc football program with a very corrupt ncaa, which punished oklahoma for trying to play the game honestly, but allowed the usc coverup to work so far, despite the massive amount of uncontrovertible evidence dug up by certain brave reporters from yahoo sports. you can still find all of the evidence from the bush/carroll/usc gate investigation online by simply typing the name reggie bush into your search engine.
we are proud to have furnished some of the leads fo that investigation and we have a lot more evidence coming.
    10. we have learned how the ncaa rules enforcement division gets bought off by schools willing to cheat and to pay the indirect monetary price, something which the oklahoma sooners would not do.
    11. hopefully, double d will reconsider now and stay at nd.

    have a great day,

robert t. gilleran and many friends
